A3 Explore local and national music networks

A musician would want to network to expand their audience and promote their music to new people who could potentially become fans and future collaborators. There are many ways to network in the music industry.

Musician to Musician - to create opportunities such as collaboration with said artist who you are talking to. You can give each other ideas as well.

Musician to Promotor - to create opportunities to be signed to a record label and get your music heard and your artistry recognised.

Musician to Fan - the relationship between a musician and their fans is crucial to their career. If an artist does not have any fans, then their music will not be as popular as those who do have fans.

Musician to Press is especially important. The relationship between an artist and the press is majorly important as if you mess something up with a journalist your career could be jeopardised.

Musician to Businessmen - the businessperson might finance the artist because they may like their music and may want to help with their funding for their career.  For any musician networking is a crucial part of having a career in the music industry.

Preparation

I have a web presence as I am on Twitter and Soundcloud. My family and friends know that I make music and are supporters. Also, to prepare for this assignment I had to create an EPK.

An EPK (Electronic Press Kit) is a digital version of a promotional package that musicians used to mail out to venues, festivals, or talent buyers. EPK’s are extensively used as a general online resume that sums up a musician's career to date.

Musinc at the Middlesbrough Town Hall

Musinc was established in 2012, born out of a targeted musical inclusion programme funded by the National Foundation for Youth Music. The programme is hosted by Middlesbrough Council, and is based at the newly refurbished concert hall and entertainment venue, Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Teesmusic Alliance

According to the official website of Teesmusic alliance, ‘’our primary focus is to play our part in building a thriving live music scene in Teesside - underpinned with a keen sense of social responsibility. We do this through our premises and activities - which are run on a not-for-profit basis, with all income being re-cycled to supply other services and events.’’  They provide opportunities for volunteers to get involved with what they do, and they welcome their contributions and enthusiasm.

Preparations for attending a network event

I have a web presence and have a twitter account as well as a YouTube and SoundCloud account. I have also created an EPK via blogger. An EPK – Electronic Press Kit is a type of press kit that can be transmitted and shared by musicians often on a website.

Networking with an artist

You need to network to expand your list of people you have worked with, so your career is more recognisable. For example, if you were to collaborate with someone such as Bruno Mars the people who work with Bruno whether in past or future would know about you and may want to work with you in the future. It is good to network with other artists in many ways including becoming well known with their collaborators to become more prominent in the music industry. There are many places where artists can network with others. Some of these include Discord for music producers and artists, Twitter and Meets and Greets. Out of these choices the best for an artist would be meet and greets as they are face-to-face where you can make more of an impression on the person you are meeting with.

Networking with a media

To network with a media successfully you must give something worthwhile, service more contacts for a decent follow up and to not sell yourself and leave something back too. Always under promise and over deliver because if you do your client cannot be disappointed in you. A mentor is someone who can help you in developing your career as an artist. College can even help in many ways including helping to improve your skills in making music including how to use software such as Cubase effectively. I would preferably like to complete my college course and go to university to develop some skills to be more recognisable and known by other musicians for their career to develop.
